Making Homeless People Smile

02 June

Here at Brand New Start we are always inspired by how people find new ways to help others and in so doing build a better community. It’s what we try to do every day in Haringey.

So it was that when we saw the video below we knew we had to share this with all of you. Leave us a comment to let us know what you think.

“No one has ever become poor by giving.” ― Anne Frankdiary of Anne Frank

Well I hope you liked this video as much as we did – if so then let us know by sharing your thoughts with us. In the meantime here is a quote that sums it all up for us.

“I don’t want to live in the kind of world where we don’t look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I cant change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.”

Bert Page Live at Brand New Start | Crouch End Festival

01 June

Bert-Page-and-Co-Optagon

The Bert Page Band are a talented London based three-piece with bold, original songs. This music is rock that doesn’t fear to travel across borders from folk to jazz. Singer/songwriter Bert plays guitar and fender rhodes while Lenny and Scott hold down the rhythm on bass and drums.

About the Band

Bert Page Bert-Page

One of the most talented keyboarders and painters we know, Bert blends in solid funk, with soulful tunes and a bit of Bad Plus style proggy Jazz thrown in to make an amazingly tasty cocktail.

Lenny Greenberg

Bassist

Lenny is a former dj and producer whose contribution to UK Hip Hop is well-documented. His ear for rhythm and a well-placed bass line led him to take up the electric bass and to his involvement in numerous live and studio projects. His style is integral to this band.

Scott Tayler

Drummer

Scott is an innovative, versatile and rocksteady percussionist, whose talents put him in high demand. His effortless style and ability to underpin any groove that comes his way make him the band’s sonic chassis.

The Rebelles at Brand New Start, Haringey | June 8th 2013

31 May

Who Are The Rebelles?

Crouch End local Tracie Hunter with Phoebe White and Anna Randall are a three-piece female harmony group.

I was delighted when Tracie, Phoebe and Anna agreed to come and sing at Brand New Start during our Crouch End Festival celebrations. This exciting new band with equally exciting faces just serves to illustrate the great talent hidden in N8. This is your chance to get to see these beautiful girls and more importantly hear their fabulous voices, not from the “balcony” a million miles away but up close and personal from just a few yards. This is one opportunity you definitely don’t want to miss. OK I’ll admit I am VERY biased because I love these ladies, so here (below) is a video so you can decide for yourselves. ….Jonny.

The Rebelles – Press

Review: MetalTalk.net

If you like your rock to stir the cockles of your heart, Tracie Hunter’s forthcoming album, ‘Vasilisa’, will have you reaching for the Kleenex (though hopefully not the noose). Having heard a couple of other tracks from ‘Vasilisa’, first single …

Review: MusicNews.com

‘Junkman’ is passionately yet sensibly handled with a slow-burning start that gradually drifts over into passionate singing charged with plenty of energy, blistering guitar solos and above all, two fantastic voices!

Review: GetToTheFront.com

The song is a great example of what a power ballad should be, and is sang with both feeling and passion by Hunter and Elliot…

Review: FairHearing.co.uk

Tracie Hunter is easily as good as most female rock singers and better than most, so let’s have this promised third album from her please…

Tommy McCook – Tribute to Muhammad Ali

30 May

Brand New Start – Bringing Joy

Here at Brand New Start we like to have fun while we work hard to bring about some fundamental improvements in our community of Haringey. So today instead of a post advertising our services, events or exhibitions we thought it would be nice to just post for your listening pleasure. Lets face it making improvements in the community should be fun not work.

A little background on Tommy McCook (I’m sure Muhammad Ali needs none).

Tommy+McCook & The+SupersonicsMcCook was born in Havana, Cuba, and moved to Jamaica in 1933. He took up the tenor saxophone at the age of eleven, when he was a pupil at the Alpha School, and eventually joined Eric Dean’s Orchestra.

In 1954 he left for an engagement in Nassau, Bahamas, after which he ended up in Miami, Florida, and it was here that McCook first heard John Coltrane and fell in love with jazz. McCook returned to Jamaica in early 1962, where he was approached by a few local producers to do some recordings. Eventually he consented to record a jazz session for Clement “Coxson” Dodd, which was issued on the album as “Jazz Jamaica”. His first ska recording was an adaptation of Ernest Gold’s “Exodus”, recorded in November 1963 with musicians who would soon make up the Skatalites.

During the 1960s and 1970s McCook recorded with the majority of prominent reggae artists of the era, working particularly with producer Bunny Lee and his house band, The Aggrovators, as well as being featured prominently in the recordings of Yabby You and the Prophets (most notably on version sides and extended disco mixes), all while still performing and recording with the variety of line ups under the Skatalites name.

McCook died of pneumonia and heart failure, aged 71, on 5 May 1998.
